Materials Engineer

Materials Engineer
Oakland, CA

Job Summary

Kairos Power LLC is seeking a highly motivated Materials Engineer with expertise relevant to metallic and ceramic structural materials and fuels. In this role, you will contribute to the engineering design and technology development programs for the FHR. The candidate must have experience in materials science and engineering. In addition, the candidate will understand material degradation management and in-service inspection strategies for advanced nuclear and other high-temperature (e.g., petrochemical) systems.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Develop and document materials procurement, certification, fabrication and test methods for metallic and ceramic materials used in FHRs and test facilities
  • Contribute to materials-related analysis and modeling for FHR conceptual design
  • Design and perform experiments for fabrication, testing and characterization of materials
  • Interface with non-destructive evaluation (NDE) engineering leads
  • Maintain knowledge and documentation of applicable codes and standards
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Education: BS or higher degree in Materials Science and Engineering, or equivalent
  • Years of experience: Nuclear or petrochemical industry internships or research laboratory experience preferred
  • Experience working in a laboratory or industrial environment on materials fabrication, testing, and characterization is desirable, along with experience using associated laboratory equipment and instrumentation
  • Familiarity with coatings, surface treatments and tribology is desirable
  • Experience with metallic and ceramic materials, including composites, is a plus
  • Experience with measuring material thermophysical properties is a plus
  • Broad experience across plant engineering topics, including corrosion, thermal degradation, thermal analysis, and mechanical design is a plus
  • Experience with applicable codes and standards is a plus
  • Proven team player with excellent verbal, written communication/presentation, and interpersonal skills.

Mechanical Engineer (Design and CAD)

Mechanical Engineer:  Design and CAD
Oakland, CA

Job Summary

Kairos Power, LLC is seeking a highly motivated Mechanical Engineer with expertise relevant to thermal, structural and mechanical design and testing. In this role, you will contribute to the engineering design and technology development programs for the FHR. The candidate must have experience in solid mechanics, thermal and stress analysis, and computer aided design (CAD). Hands-on ability to work in machine shops is also desirable.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Develop mechanical design information, including functional requirements, for major FHR systems, structures and components, and document in design packages
  • Perform mechanical design tradeoff and optimization studies
  • Create and update CAD models for FHR systems, structures and components
  • Create engineering drawings, including dimensioning and tolerancing
  • Perform thermal and stress analysis using analytical and FEA analysis methods
  • Maintain knowledge of and assess compliance with applicable codes and standards
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Education: BS or higher degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent
  • Years of experience:  Industry internships or research laboratory experience preferred; additional CAD and mechanical design experience is desirable
  • Proficiency with CAD modeling is a requirement
  • Experience using analytical methods and FEA simulation to perform thermal and stress analysis is desirable
  • Experience working in machine shops is desirable
  • Familiarity with applicable codes and standards, particularly Division 5 of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel code, is a plus
  • Experience with design of nuclear mechanical systems, such as remote maintenance, casks and shielding, is a plus
  • Broad experience across plant engineering topics is a plus
  • Proven team player with excellent verbal, written communication/presentation, and interpersonal skills.

Nuclear Island System Design Lead

Design Lead Engineer: Nuclear Island
Oakland, CA

Job Summary

Kairos Power, LLC is seeking a highly motivated Nuclear Island System Design Lead with expertise relevant to design of complex facilities. In this role, you will lead the nuclear island and site design program for the fluoride-salt-cooled, high-temperature reactor (FHR). The candidate must have experience or ability to rapidly learn computer-aided design (CAD); civil-structural engineering and modular construction methods; principles for radiological zoning; mechanical, electrical and ventilation equipment design; waste and hazardous material handling; design for decommissioning; design-basis and requirements management; and codes and standards applicable to these areas.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead Kairos Power’s nuclear island and site pre-conceptual design effort
  • Develop design schedule, milestones, and decision criteria for nuclear island design effort
  • Establish and maintain systems, structures and component classification and requirements documentation system
  • Lead nuclear island design trade and optimization studies
  • Coordinate facility economic studies and interface with external architect-engineering contractors
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Education: BS in Civil, Mechanical, Chemical or Nuclear Engineering, or equivalent
  • Years of experience:  4+ years in complex facility and system design
  • Knowledge of civil-structural engineering, including modular construction methods, is desirable
  • Knowledge of applicable codes and standards is desirable
  • Proficiency with CAD modeling is desirable
  • Familiarity with design basis and requirements management is a plus
  • Desirable skills include understanding structural engineering; design of steel/concrete composite structures; radiological zoning; ventilation; shielding and remote maintenance; cranes; electrical power supply, instrumentation and cabling; fire protection; access control; waste handling; nuclear and industrial safety; design for decommissioning.

Reactor Core Design Lead

Design Lead Engineer: Reactor Core

Job Summary

Kairos Power is seeking a highly motivated Reactor Core Design Lead with expertise relevant to design, modeling and simulation (M&S) of nuclear reactor cores. In this role, you will contribute to the engineering design and technology development programs for the FHR. The candidate must have experience in reactor neutronics, core design and optimization, core multi-physics M&S (transients and depletion), and reactor control and safety.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead Kairos Power codes and methods development and high performance computing for reactor neutronics
  • Lead analysis and M&S for FHR core designs to identify optimal concepts in the pre-conceptual design phase and to assess and document key design elements including fuel utilization, reactor control, component shielding, dose-rates and lifetime prediction
  • Develop reactivity feedback models for integral system simulation and integral effects testing
  • Develop reactor start-up testing protocols
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Education: PhD in Nuclear Engineering, or equivalent
  • Years of experience: 4+ years reactor core design and analysis
  • Experience with analysis, M&S methods for reactor neutronics and core design required
  • Experience in discrete element modeling of granular flows is a plus
  • Experience in high performance computing and managing software is a plus
  • Experience with multi-physics simulation for fuel depletion and performance, and for reactivity transient response, is a plus
  • Skills should include understanding reactor start-up, control, shielding, activation, safety, and system engineering fundamentals

Salt Chemistry Engineer

Job Summary

Kairos Power, LLC is seeking a highly motivated Salt Chemistry Engineer with expertise relevant to high temperature molten salt handling, electrochemistry, purification, mass transport, materials compatibility and corrosion science. In this role, you will contribute to the engineering design and technology development programs for the fluoride-salt-cooled, high-temperature reactor (FHR). The candidate must have experience in chemistry and/or chemical engineering, with a preference for experience in electrochemistry, mass transport, and plant engineering topics relevant to molten salts.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Perform calculations, modeling and simulation for molten salt chemistry and mass transport to support reactor conceptual design
  • Design, develop and conduct experiments relevant to understanding molten salt electrochemical, mass transport (including tritium), and corrosion phenomenology
  • Develop procedures and training materials for salt handling and purification
  • Coordinate with salt supply chain vendors
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Education: MS or higher degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or equivalent
  • Years of experience: Industry internships or research laboratory experience preferred
  • Skills should include understanding of electrochemistry and excellent chemical engineering and system engineering fundamentals
  • Experience with analysis, modeling and simulation methods for chemistry control and mass transport is desired
  • Experience in molten salts, liquid metals, high-temperature petrochemical processes, and/or battery systems is a plus
  • Broad experience across plant engineering topics, including corrosion, thermal analysis, and mechanical design is a plus
  • Experience with experimental methods for chemical process systems is a plus

Thermal-Fluids Test Engineer

Test Engineer: Thermal-Fluids

Job Summary

Kairos Power LLC is seeking a highly motivated Thermal-Fluids Test Engineer with expertise relevant to design, construction, operation, and data acquisition and control of separate effects test (SET) and integral effect test (IET) experiments. In this role, you will contribute to the engineering design and technology development programs for the fluoride-salt-cooled, high-temperature reactor (FHR). The candidate must have knowledge of instrumentation and control (I&C), experiment design and construction, and experimental procedure development.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Design, produce, construct and operate scaled thermal-fluids experiments under nuclear quality assurance code (NQA-1)
  • Develop software for experimental control and data acquisition
  • Maintain design control and quality assurance documentation during experiment design, fabrication, construction, and operation, including CAD models documenting as-built configurations
  • Develop procedures for experiment operation and data collection
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Education: BS or higher degree in Mechanical, Nuclear or Chemical Engineering, or equivalent
  • Years of experience:  Industry internships or research laboratory experience preferred
  • Experience with control and data acquisition software, and instrument calibration, is required
  • Experience working in a laboratory or industrial environment on thermal/fluids testing is desirable, along with experience using associated laboratory equipment and instrumentation
  • Experience with computer aided design is a plus
  • Experience with thermal and fluids analysis and modeling is a plus
  • Experience with developing experimental procedures, safety plans and reviews, and implementing quality assurance is a plus
  • Experience with machining and welding is a plus
  • Proven team player with excellent verbal, written communication/presentation, and interpersonal skills
