Nuclear Island System Design Lead

Design Lead Engineer: Nuclear Island

Job Summary

Kairos Power, LLC is seeking a highly motivated Nuclear Island System Design Lead with expertise relevant to design of complex facilities. In this role, you will lead the nuclear island and site design program for the fluoride-salt-cooled, high-temperature reactor (FHR). The candidate must have experience or ability to rapidly learn computer-aided design (CAD); civil-structural engineering and modular construction methods; principles for radiological zoning; mechanical, electrical and ventilation equipment design; waste and hazardous material handling; design for decommissioning; design-basis and requirements management; and codes and standards applicable to these areas.

Primary Responsibilities

Reactor Core Physicist

Job Summary

Kairos Power is seeking a highly motivated Reactor Core Physicist with expertise relevant to design, modeling and simulation (M&S) of nuclear reactor cores. In this role, you will contribute to the engineering design and technology development programs for the fluoride-salt-cooled, high-temperature reactor (FHR). The candidate must have experience in reactor physics, core design and optimization, core multi-physics M&S (transients and depletion), and reactor control and safety.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Contribute to Kairos Power codes and methods development and high performance computing for reactor physics
  • Perform M&S for FHR core designs to identify optimal concepts in the pre-conceptual design phase and to assess and document key design elements including fuel utilization, reactor control, component shielding, dose-rates and lifetime prediction
  • Develop reactivity feedback models for integral system simulation and integral effects testing
  • Develop reactor start-up testing protocols

Qualifications

  • Education: PhD in Nuclear Engineering, or equivalent
  • Years of experience:  4+ years reactor core design and analysis
  • Experience with analysis, M&S methods for reactor physics, core design and radiation transport required
  • Experience with high temperature systems a plus
  • Experience in discrete element modeling of granular flows is a plus
  • Experience in high performance computing and managing software is a plus

Structural Design Lead

Design Lead Engineer:  Structural

Job Summary

Kairos Power, LLC is seeking a highly motivated Structural Design Lead with expertise relevant to design of high-temperature mechanical and process systems, including interfacing civil-structural systems. In this role, you will lead structural design for Kairos Power’s fluoride-salt-cooled, high-temperature reactor (FHR), balance of plant, and test loops. The candidate must have experience with finite element modeling and its application to the design of structures and components subjected to complex thermal, mechanical and other (e.g. seismic) loads. The candidate must have experience or ability to rapidly learn design principles and simulation methods to predict and optimize performance and service life for metallic, ceramic composite, thermal insulation, and steel/concrete composite structures subjected to neutron and gamma radiation, corrosion, thermal creep and degradation, and complex thermal stress and mechanical loads.  The candidate must have experience with or ability to rapidly learn applicable codes and standards.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead Kairos Power’s structural design and analysis efforts for reactor, balance of plant, and test loop systems
  • Guide selection of modeling and simulation methods for structural design and lead code verification and validation efforts

Responsible to purchase assigned materials at the lowest total cost for the quantity, quality, and delivery required. Coordinate all supplier contacts and act as team leader on supplier related projects. Communicate promptly any material problems and lead in finding solutions. Establish accurate production materials standard costs and monitor them.

Responsibilities

  • Provide excellent and timely customer service to internal customers in fulfilling the procurement process
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with reliable suppliers for specified supplies, while understanding the production processes and internal systems.
  • Purchase requirements of assigned materials at the lowest long-term cost for the quantity, quality and delivery required.
  • Expedite materials when required and handle any unanticipated requests or other problems on materials purchased.

Job Summary:

The Director, New Product Development is responsible for building and managing the Project and Systems Engineering teams in a start-up environment in order to facilitate the business and technical success of the product and multiple supporting projects within the constraints of the allocated budget and schedule. Primary Responsibilities:

Project Management / Engineering

  • Manage the strategy and execution of multiple, complex cross-functional product development and technical commercialization projects in accordance with the Product Development Process (PDP)

  • Develop, implement, and employ tools for effectively managing team meetings, including the scheduling of meetings, preparation of agendas, development of meeting minutes, and follow-up action items

  • Lead overall systems engineering and architecture development of new products

  • Facilitate design reviews and other technical reviews to ensure that product elements meet requirements throughout the development process

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead Kairos Power’s development of high temperature systems using molten salts
    Develop design schedule, milestones, and decision criteria for flowing salt systems to ensure reliability and safe operation
  • Develop procedures, training materials for design practices and operation of molten salt systems
  • Establish operation protocols that include maintenance and inspection procedures
  • Work with vendors to identify custom components on an as needed basis
  • Work with engineers and technicians to perform tasks within the programmatic needs

Qualifications

  • Education: BS with 5+ years of relevant experience or advanced degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering, or equivalent

Fuel Performance Engineer

Kairos Power LLC is seeking a highly motivated candidate to lead fuel performance modeling, analysis, and design of tristructural isotropic (TRISO) fuel for application to a fluoride-salt cooled reactor system. The candidate should have a strong background in the multi-physics effects of fuel irradiation and fuel performance. The ideal candidate would have experience with the integration of a fuel performance model in a multi-physics environment to understand effects of irradiation behavior on fuel performance and related design codes. Strong commitment to teamwork is required.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Develop performance model for design and qualification of TRISO fuel with integration in multi-physics models for reactor core design
  • Contribute to fuels-related analysis and mechanistic-based modeling for FHR conceptual design
  • Analyze existing and new fuels irradiation data to understand performance and guide fuel design and qualification effort
  • Ability to modify existing codes and models as well as generate new models based on reactor design requirements
  • Experience in benchmarking and performing code verification and validation is also highly desired

Senior Systems Engineer

This goal will be accomplished through the commercialization of the fluoride-salt-cooled, high-temperature reactor (FHR) that can be deployed with robust safety, affordable costs, and flexible operation to accommodate the expansion of variable renewables.

Job Summary:

The Senior Systems Engineer manages the overall systems engineering process for the entire lifecycle of the product, including development, test, deployment, sales, support, and decommissioning.  This process includes the translation of market and customer needs into customer use cases and operational scenarios (concept of operations) and the development and management of system, subsystems, and component requirements.  The Senior Systems Engineer will also conduct requirements and systems analysis, system/subsystem architectural modeling, functional decomposition, systems performance analysis, and product verification and verification planning.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop the product concept of operations, customer use cases, and operational scenarios
  • Drive direction and support trade studies, system sensitivity studies, design optimization studies, system performance and design assessments
  • In conjunction with Design Engineering, create and manage system requirements and the requirements decomposition process and guide the development of functional and physical architectures and system specifications that meet the system requirements
  • Create and manage the requirements verification methods, requirements database, and compliance and traceability matrices to ensure that as the system design/build matures it satisfies each system requirement
  • Collaborate with other engineers and partners to ensure systems requirements and plans meet business needs, which may involve negotiating requirements with internal customers, such as, Design Engineering, Project Management, and Business Development, leveraging Systems Engineering Management Planning documentation
  • In conjunction with the Project Manager, manage the individual project risks (identify potential risks and propose mitigation strategies to technical leadership and project management)
  • Prepare and present system engineering materials during design reviews and other formal program reviews
  • Support systems integration and test activities, system verification, system validation, and system safety efforts
  • Leverage engineering experience to highlight integration checkpoints necessary between systems engineering and other engineering disciplines
  • Ensure engineering quality through application of best practices in systems engineering, including requirements management, verification and validation, design failure mode and effects analysis (DFMEA), etc.
  • Support the development of systems engineering best practices, processes, and continuous improvement initiatives

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills
  • Significant experience with systems engineering and product development for complex systems
  • Proven and demonstrated experience in the full life cycle of products from concept to production including system architecture, requirements, design implementation, integration, and verification/validation; experience with highly regulated industries and with the deployment of large, complex, industrial products via engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) firms highly desired
  • Strong understanding of good development and systems engineering processes, such as lean product development, Design for Excellence (DFX), Six Sigma concepts, value engineering, and product life cycle management
  • Expertise in requirements management and product lifecycle management tools (e.g., DOORS, Jama, Oracle Agile, Siemens Teamcenter, PTC Windchill, etc.)

Kairos Power, LLC is a new nuclear energy technology and engineering company whose mission is to enable the world’s transition to clean energy, with the ultimate goal to dramatically improve people’s quality of life while protecting the environment. This goal will be accomplished through the commercialization of the fluoride-salt-cooled, high-temperature reactor (FHR) that can be deployed with robust safety, affordable costs, and flexible operation to accommodate the expansion of variable renewables.

Job Summary:

The Senior Project Manager functions as a business and cross-functional team manager for the development of Kairos Power’s reactor plant and key supporting systems, subsystems, and components. The Senior Project Manager ensures the daily program, project, and product objectives are synchronized and leads the cross-functional team in the technology and product development and ultimate commercialization and deployment of the key reactor plant systems to meet customer requirements and deliver superior customer satisfaction.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead cross-functional teams (including Design Engineering, Systems Engineering, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Service, Regulatory, Quality, Finance, and Marketing) in the end-to-end product development lifecycle for the key systems, subsystems, and components of a new advanced nuclear reactor
  • Work collaboratively with the Design Engineering Lead to ensure the successful delivery of engineering projects to meet customer requirements and deliver customer value while achieving cost, schedule, quality, and other specified targets and objectives
  • Develop and manage the overall project work break down structure and integrated master schedule to deliver projects on-time in accordance with internal and external market requirements
  • Work with functional management to obtain and manage appropriate staffing levels for the project
  • Identify project risks and develop risk management plans and mitigation strategies to address these risks
  • Develop critical path analyses to manage product / project critical paths and to identify means to accelerate timelines, reduce costs, and/or mitigate risks
  • Interact with key stakeholders, including customers, regulators, suppliers, and partners to ensure the successful delivery of the reactor plant and/or supporting systems
  • Conduct weekly Core Team meetings to provide for cross-functional communication and to manage the cross-functional product development activities
  • Manage and develop other Project Managers leading the development of supporting reactor plant systems
  • Collect information for ongoing data mining and analysis to ensure effective problem solving and solution design
  • Communicate project objectives to all team members involved
  • Coordinate and lead (in conjunction with the Design Lead) key technical design reviews and business gate reviews with the Kairos Power Governance Committee
  • Support the development of project management best practices, processes, and continuous improvement initiatives

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills
  • Experience in managing technical projects and facilitating, cross-functional, integrated product team activities
  • Significant experience with product development for complex systems
  • Broad-based business acumen and technical knowledge and experience in order to understand and evaluate design and development activities across all functions; preferred emphasis in large industrial products and applications
  • Proven and demonstrated experience in the full life cycle of products from concept to production including system architecture, requirements, design implementation, integration, and verification/validation; experience with deployment of large, complex, industrial products via engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) firms highly desired
  • Strong understanding of good development engineering processes such as lean product development, Design for Excellence (DFX), Six Sigma concepts, product life cycle management, and systems engineering
  • Ability to analyze assigned projects, break down work into functional disciplines, and develop plans for the work to be accomplished.
  • Strong command of project management and development process best practices
  • Outstanding written communication skills
  • Strong verbal communication skills for internal and customer presentations
  • Strong practical organization, facilitation, and arbitration skills

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors of Science degree in Engineering or related field required.
  • Masters of Business Administration (MBA) and/or Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification desired
  • At least 10 years of related technical experience and/or training and a proven track record of at least 5 years of project or technical leadership
  • Specific experience with nuclear power, chemical processing, power generation, or other large industrial products desired.
